Practical 4 Game Machine Challenge🎮☺
In this lesson, every group must design and make their own easy and fun games for primary school kids 👦👧(10-11 years old). Most of the groups decided to make pinball-related games, so our group decided to make something different from the rest. We came up with a boxing game. Before coming to the Fablab, we made some plans about what parts each of us should make. Moreover, we also made dimensions of the toy, so it’ll be easier for us to approach each part. Our toy contains some techniques which were learnt from the previous lesson, some of the techniques we used are L-brace and flange. Apart from the cardboard, which was provided by the teachers, we have brought our own materials. The picture of the materials is shown below.
Materials Used📦✂✏📎📏(refer to Figure 1)
- Cardboard 📦
- Wooden ice cream stick (1cm and 1.5cm in width)
- Straw 🥤
- Bottle cap
- Skewer 🍢
- Paper clip 📎
- Hot gun glue
- Cutter
- Scissor ✂
- Superglue
- Rubber band
- Moving eyes
- Chopstick
Steps on making the boxing game 🎮
Firstly, we need to create boxing players. It uses two sizes of ice cream sticks, straws, chopsticks, paper clips and two bottle caps for each player. The player head is created by connecting the two bottle caps using paper clips. The head is then connected to a chopstick which is placed into a straw. This is to allow the head to fly upwards when hit by the opponent. The straw is connected to the “chest” of the player, which is made using the 1.5cm width ice cream stick. It is connected to the “shoulders” on each end, which is made using 1cm width ice cream sticks. The “shoulders” are glued together such that it creates a gap in between. This gap allows ice cream sticks to be inserted and to move each arm, the bottom of the ice cream stick is connected to the base.
Lastly, we made the boxing ring so that the two players can go against each other. The ring is made with cardboard, chopstick and rubber band. First, the base of the ring is cut out like the picture shown below. Next, to add level to the ring, the fence of height 5cm is cut out and stick to the base using hot glue. After which, the top of the ring is cut out with two holes that is of square shape in the middle. This is so that when the base of the player is inserted into the ring, the character can be inserted from the top of the ring. Hence, allowing the players to move around. The final product is shown in Figure 5.
Rules of the Boxing Game 👻
The rules are simple, whichever player can box the other player’s head first wins. The number of rounds can be set in odd numbers i.e. 1,3,5,7. Whoever wins the most rounds will win the game. Most importantly, have fun!
Some challenges met and how we fix it 😥😯😣
When we decided to do this boxing game, we thought it would be easy, but in reality, we came across quite a few difficulties. We were given only two hours to make this game and it was clearly not sufficient because we didn’t manage to make our mechanism of the arms work. The time was very tight, so we couldn’t fix the problems in class. However, we continued to fix it at home to make it work. Initially, the hand mechanism didn't work because the wooden sticks were sticked very closely and this creates a lot of friction, so it prevents the hand from moving smoothly. Thus, we added one more layer to the character so that the gap between the two big wooden sticks is now bigger, thus allowing the hand to move more smoothly. From this experience, we learnt that what we thought at first may not always work out as we will only find out where the problem lies when we actually make the game ourselves. The important part is to think of a solution to fix the problem so that the game can work. It was a fruitful and fun journey making this boxing game.
